Before & Afters

What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a device that is used by the dentist to support restorations in an individual’s jaw bone that are a resemblance of a tooth or several teeth as a replacement. The implant is made of high-grade, pure titanium that mimics the structure of the root of a tooth. It is typically placed in the bones of a person’s jaw.

How do dental implants work?
The dental implant procedure happens in a number of steps. First, the patient should make an appointment so that the dentist could assess the surrounding area in the jaw and tooth. The dentist will treat any issues such as dental decay. A thorough cleaning is always of the utmost importance before any further procedures are carried out. The dentist will then perform several x-rays when fitting a patient with a new dental implant. Occasionally, a CT scan may be done to assist the dentist to identify any abnormalities in the bone.
The gum is then cut and lifted. A hole would be drilled in the bone of the jaw where the implant would be located. A screw is put into the hole and the gum is stitched back up. Stitches are typically removed within a period of 7-14 days. Over the next 5-6 months, the implant will heal and fuse with the surrounding bone jaw. Once the healing period is over, the gum is then lifted and a dental abutment is fixed into the implant by the use of a screw. Permanent restoration is fitted after 4-6 weeks.
In some cases, there may not be enough bone material to accommodate the dental implant. If this is the case, there may be a need for a bone graft.
