Dental and Oral Hygiene

Preventative maintenance is often the best course of action to avoid major dental problems. By maintaining proper dental hygiene in NYC, you reduce the risk of cavities, infection and bacteria.

What does dental hygiene consist of?

Dental hygiene procedures involve the general maintenance of tooth and oral hygiene, also combining patient education into the prevention of potential oral issues.

General Check-Up and Regular Exams

General dental checkups are done by general/family dentists so they may check or look for some signs of oral health issues. These general checkups are important as prevention is always better than cure. Also, early detection may save you from an irreparable case of tooth loss or gum disease.

At our dental practice, we use the latest in dental technologies such as the Diagnodent, a laser cavity detection system. Additionally, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that each patient visit the dental office for general check-ups and cleanings every six months.

Screening for Oral Cancer

Dentists advise that family members over the age of 18 years old should undergo an oral cancer screening annually. An oral cancer screening is a test which consists of tactile and visual tests and screening for early detection of oral cancer. If patients are involved in tobacco use, a more frequent oral cancer screening may be advised. The oral cancer screening takes only about 3 to 5 minutes and is very simple and painless.

Dental Cleanings

Dental cleanings are performed to remove stubborn dental plaque from our teeth. This will prevent cavities, periodontitis, and gingivitis.

Dental Sealants

To protect the teeth and prevent bacteria, which cause cavities and attack the enamel, sealants are placed on the biting areas of molars.

Night Guards

Night guards are dental accessories used by patients to relax their jaw muscles helping to reduce teeth grinding.

What are the benefits of dental hygiene?

Planning and keeping regular visits to your dentist is the best way to prevent potential problems in the future. The American Dental Association recommends visiting the dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning.

At the dental practice of Dr. Kate Brayman, we believe that educating our patients is a solid step in the prevention of dental diseases.
